Is there a max load for this?? I need to mount a GPS unit on which weighs about 300 grams, and am worried it will slip round the bars?

It will be fine just use a piece of old inner tube between the clamp and your bike's handlebars.

You hsould be fine with a 300g GPS, the clamp is very secure.
