Questions & Answers for Schwalbe Marathon Winter Performance Rigid Road Tyre

Question
Would you recommend putting these on all winter? I wouldn't fancy changing them every other day as the weather changes.
I generally ride on a two path, which is slippy due to wet leaves and mud etc.

you could but you will lose studs fast on tarmac as they tend to pull-out quickly if used on normal road surfaces

If you generally ride off-road, then yes I would recommend putting them all winter. Traction seems good in above-zero temperatures on- and off-road, and though I'm guessing here, I don't think your studs will wear out as quickly on typical towpaths as they might on tarmac.

answer 3
After nearly 100km of 40% ice and hard packed snow and 60% pavement, the studs look fine. I will leave my studded tires on until I don't have to worry about ice any more.

Leave them on all Winter. For a durable tyre they offer a comfortable ride!

answer 5
Ideally you should ride these on the road before hitting any ice in order to bed the studs into the tyre properly. So you can ride the tyres on other surfaces other then snow and ice. They still have deep channels in order to cope with water and loose surfaces so you should be fine if you aren't pushing it too hard on hard, slippery surfaces.

Question
It says 35c but do you need extra clearance for the spikes?

No, the spikes doesn´t stick out to the side. The profileheight though is a little higher than a road tyre without studs (more like a studded cyclecross-tyre) in the same 35c size.

answer 2
I have fitted these tyres onto a standard 700 wheel with mudguards on a hybrid bike and have not encountered any problems, although I have tried to give as much clearance to the mudguards as possible as I suspect that a certain amount of snow will try to clog between the tyre tread and mudguard when in use.

answer 3
You might need a tiny bit more mudguard clearance, if your guards are set very close. But the "spikes" are actually little studs and only project a couple of millimetres. Regarding rim width, just choose the same size tyre as you normally use - the spikes don't change that at all. They are very effective - I use them every winter.

I would advise an extra 10mm clearance due to wheel flex etc.

Question
will 35c tyres fit on my 32c rims
I would ideally like to not spend the best past of this winter on my backside like the last one so am looking at these. However my bike came with 700 32c tyres, will these 35c ones fit? It's a hybrid so the clearance is pretty good but with the spikes could I be pushing it. Ta

I've got a pair of these tyres and I've fitted them to rims with a 15mm inner diameter without problem. Check you wheel rim. It will almost certainly be more than 15mm. If it is, you'll be fine.

I bought the Marathons for last years winter and I was mighty impressed with the grip. They were a little wider than the 32c tyres but not by much.
I have the slimmest mudguards from SKS on my bike and I had to tweak the fasteners a little because they are made for 20 - 28c tyres.

The spikes doesn´t stick out over the sidewall so that´s no problem.
Be careful to run them in proper on bare asphalt, I got mine a little late and had to run in icy conditions. Therefore I lost 1 spike out front but the 239 left is enough.

Also surprisingly smooth wintertyre but expect spiked tyres to run with 10 - 15% more rolling resistance than a tire with road pattern !
But that just makes you stronger and you will fly when switching back in the spring !

Unfortunately we are still awaiting an update for the delivery date on these tyres. Demand is very high at this time due to the extreme weather in many areas of the UK so we are currently unsure on the delivery time.
