Questions & Answers for Shimano 105 5700 10 Speed Cassette

Question
best upgrade for hilly commute
My current 105 commute bike has a 46-36t crank combined with a 12-25t sprocket but i find it a hard slog on a hilly homeward bound ride with panniers etc.
Is it possible to change to a 11-28t sprocket adn would this help me with the hils?
I don't fully understand all the gearing jargon but hope sombody can help me out.

it might be just as cheap to change the 36T small chainring for a 34T. If you go to a 28T rear sprocket your rear derailleur might not be able to manage it (unless it is 5700 series 105).

this depends on your rear deraiiluer, you need to research if it will support a 28 tooth cog on the cassette

An 11-28 or even 11-32 would aid you greatly just make sure that your rear derailleur can handle it. If you have a mid to long cage, 11-28 would be fine regardless.

Generally speaking, it should be possible but it depends on some additional factors that you did not specify. Please find my review on this item that goes into some detail.

My personal experience is that such an upgrade (25T to 28T) does indeed help but not as dramatically as one would hope :-).

I am a regular, but only recreational, rider and I only use 28T at long-ish hills that are steeper than 8%. For anything easier 25T is fine.

I have done just that and it works fine. I can't tell the difference. I think the difference is just to do with tooth profiles for easier shifting.

The 6600 rear derailleur is listed as 27t compatible so this should be fine.

Yes, it actually will! When researching before my purchase I found that the advice on the Internet was contradictory and often incorrect.

In the end I took a risk and am happy to say that it does work just fine on my short cage (SS) Shimano 105 derailleur. It works in all gear combinations including the "non recommended" ones like the large chainwheel and the largest sprocket (i.e. 50T at the front with 28T at the rear).

Btw I have a compact chainweel set (50-34) at the front.

Question
I have a standard OCR1 Giant 2007 10sp with 105 drive train. I have replaced the 5600 cassette 12-25 with a 5700 11-28 combination.
The change over is not running smoothly - the chain has 3000kms on it - do any other components need to be changed to do this swap that may be causing the chain to ride up, mainly on the 28 tooth sprocket or is just time for a new chain ?

First, toss the chain - it is past its used by date - which can be confirmed with a chain stretch tool (fancy looking ruler) or by a mechanic at your LBS. I believe the 105 5600 rear derailleur was designed for a maximum rear sprocket of 27T hence the lack of smoothness with a 28. A Shimano 5700 rear derailleur or a SRAM derailleur should cope with a 28T sprocket

new derailleur or new lower chainring may be worn out, they do wear out. Possibly, try another high quality (Wipperman brand) compatible chain.

Bike mechanics will advise that when changing a component in the drivetrain system it is worth changing the whole system so all the components can "bed in" together, from the sounds of it you may need a new chain and maybe a gear adjustment.

f they have a non-indexed (i.e. friction only) option then yes. Obviously an indexing mech will have problems with the degree to shift the cable for each gear-change.
answered 1 year, 4 months ago
by
CommutingCyclist
answer 2
Unfortunately not, if the shifter is indexed you won't be able to use all 10 sprockets on the rear cassette so it wouldn't give you any benefit over a 9 speed cassette.

Question
11T lockring included
I'm currently running a 5600 12-27 cassette but keen to get an 11T sprocket so looking at a 5700 11-25 cassette.

I believe these are compatible but the 11T cassette requires a different lockring - is this supplied with the cassette or does it need to be purchased separately?
