Questions & Answers for Hutchinson Fusion 3 Tubeless Road Tyre

Question
How does one repair a flat on a long training ride with these tyres? Is it simply a matter of fitting a normal tube? I have a set of Campag 2 Way Fit

I use Stan's sealant so hopefully don't have to worry about puncture repair on the road. I still carry a spare tube though!

In theory you can fit tubes but beware that the inner wall may contain several stones etc that have self-sealed into the tyre which will puncture the new tube. Rather than tubes I now carry a small vial of No Tubes Sealant to top up if needed. If I get a puncture that does not immediately self-seal I immediately rotate the wheel so the liquid flows to the puncture area. This seems to work. Try to avoid having to remove the tyre on the road as it can be difficult to re-seat.

Four ways :
1) You can fit a regular tube inside, which means removing the tubeless valve carefully. Messy if you have used the Hutchinson flat-proofing liquid. Remove tube and fix tyre ASAP after.
2) You can carry the pressure gas canister with flat-proofing liquid made by Hutchinson to reinflate and seal, but if it does not succeed (puncture too large, tear) you are stuck putting in a tube and it will be messy. This costs you a canister every time.
3) You can patch the inside of a CLEAN tyre - use the special patches made by Hutchinson. Slow (gluing needed), but works well and is durable. You MUST clean the area to be patched very carefully (use first aid type alcohol swabs).
4) Carry a spare tyre only.

Always take a tube as a last resort, it will be a bit more fiddly to fit cause the tyre is a tight fit.
I have put a latex sealant in mine which should self seal, do both and you will never have to think of a long walk home.

If the sealant doesn't seal the tire, put in a tube as you would a regular clincher rim, just be make sure the large bead of the Fusion tire doesn't pinch the tube.

You can fit a tube but it would be difficult. I've had punctures on rides but with sealant I have never been unable to finish even a long ride.

Basically yes. The following is how it works with Ultegra 6700's - I'd suggest you try it at home first on your Campags. Remove (and save) the special tubeless valve by loosening the knurled ring and pulling it out. Then fit a tube in the normal way. Even though there's no rim tape, it works fine as there are no spoke holes.

If you use some sealant inside the tyre, most punctures will mend themselves (enough to get you home anyway) and you won't have to do the above.

Yes you can just fit a standard tube or you can use a tubeless tyre repair kit to get you home.

Actually, after using them more than one year, I find that they hold air pressure much better that tube type clincher tyres. I have them on Campagnolo Eurus two-way fit rims.

I would say yes, but as long as you check the pressures before you go your fine and even if you dont you can run these at lower pressures than clinchers with tubes and they may even be more comfortable (when your on a rough the surface)

Results vary for different people - for me yes the tyres needed extra air every 2-3 days.
Then I added a tyre sealant and have only had to pumped them up once a month since.

Yes mostly tubeless will lose there pressure a little more than a tyre and tube though the better you buy the better they will be. having said that when not being used for some time it will lengthin the life of a tubeless tyre to let the pressure down, ie when in storeage and such, hope this helps.

answer 11
The reason inner tubes go flat is because the rubber eventually bleeds air through the material. If you get a good seal between the wheel and tyre they should be better at holding the air then a inner tube due to the thickness of the carcass.

Yes, you need tubeless-ready rims and wheels... or a no tubes conversion kit such as Stan's No Tubes

If you use the Stans NoTubes sealant system you can convert virtually any clincher rim to tubeless. I've converted my Mavic Pro rims using Stans' system and have had no problems.

These tyres are a tight fit on all rims because of the tubeless bead but they will work on any rim. However if you want to be tubeless then you will need either tubeless rims or convert your standard rims with Stans notubes equipment.

If you use them on standard rims on their own then they are just like any other tyre and will need a tube.

answer 4
No you don't. Tubeless road tyres can be fitted to any rim as long as you can get an airtight seal - you might need to use some tape along the base of the rim to get a good seal as well as some tubeless sealant (like Stans). All tubeless specific rims do over and above normal rims is make it easier to mount the tyre and provide a better rim to create the initial seal.

No, you can convert your rims to tubeless but its not cheap. If you have Mavic rims like the Ksyrium you only need valves

No you don't - if you use normal rims you will need to use special tape to seal the spoke holes. There are a couple of brands that sell kits to convert normal rims to tubeless - Stans and Effetto.

You can convert normal rims but my preference is to use 2way fit rims. I have had no experience with converted rims, by my experience has been very positive with 2way fit.

answer 9
Possibly not - you can buy a conversion kit which involves using 2 layers of special rim tape and a lot of sealant. But far better IMHO to use dedicated tubeless rims with a specially-shaped lip and no spoke holes.

As far as I know, nothing else but black. Black and grey tyres would be the older Fusion 2 model.
