Questions & Answers for SRAM PG1070 10 Speed Cassette - Road

Question
SRAM v Shimano
I presently have Shimano Ultegra 6600 groupset with a 12-27 rear cassette which I really like. Shimano have stopped making this casssette.

Will the SRAM cassette 12 - 27 be compatible with my present set up? Is this SRAMs 'equivalent' to ultegra range.

(I don't much want to change to the new Shimano 6700 range 11- 28 casette - too wide - and there is some doubt re compatibility anyway I believe)

You can freely interchange SRAM and Shimano cassettes.

Your wheels must be shimano 9/10 compatible, not shimano 10 speed only. I.e right now you are using the small spacer before mounting the 6600 cassette.

Not many wheels were made shimano 10 speed only, and only by shimano themselves, and even they have stopped doing that now.

SRAM & Shimano are compatible across the range. I've just changed to SRAM force for my TT bike - soooo much better than Shimano, which I'd always been happy with before.

Generally Shimano and SRAM drivetrain components are interchangeable. However, I have just fitted a 11-23 PG1070 cassette to an SRAM S30 Al Sprint rear wheel to run on on my Rival equipped Boardman carbon and things haven't gone smoothly. I am using an Ultegra directional chain and when running on the 11 sprocket the chain catches on one of the teeth on the 12 sprocket. Each sprocket has a tooth that points slightly towards the adjacent smaller sprocket to aid in upshifting and it is this tooth that the chain catches on. Doesn't happen on the other sprockets though and an older 11-28 OG1070 is fine.

You should have no issues!

I run RED and FORCE gears on our bikes and have wheels with both 5600 (105) and 1070 cassettes and have not issues.

Interestingly, I borrowed a wheel at a race a while ago with a 6700 cassette and it ran fine.

As far as "what is the equivalent' - FORCE and RiVAL are very close in quality to Ultegra - if you are a weight kind of person, they are very close (the new APEX is probably closer to 105), with RED.

I use 1070 with RED as I can't see the justification for the price and the performance that it offers for an amateur!

Just replaced a SRAM OG 1070 with a SRAM PG1070 to my bike that has a Dura-Ace long cage rear derailleur, 105 front mechs, rings and and shifters and gear shifts are smooth and easy. The SRAM user manual for the cassette states "Any hub with Shimano compatible driver body EXCEPT DURA-ACE deep spline 10 speed casstte bodies.

You should be fine with a SRAM cassette on your Ultegra groupset. The Force/Rivel is similar in quality to the Ultegra range.

You are able to mix and match cassettes from Sram and Shimano. The only thing you will need to check is if the hub body is compatible. Shimano have a higher shoulder on the hub body, however there are hub body's which will suit both SRAM and Shimano. You just need to check which one you have.

Technically you should adjust the chain length, if you like to cycle on the big chain ring and the lowest gear (largest Cog) on the back. Generally when you cycle on the 28 on the back, you won't be using the big chain ring.
Be sure to check if your chain is still within specification, because if you put a new cassette on with a worn out chain, you will wear the cassete out really quick

if yur chain was the correct length to start with it will be too short in the Big/Big combo.

it is still usable, but you just need to avoid this combo (and maybe the one below it) but you really should be avoiding this chain cross anyway.

answer 4
You should not need to.

I have 11-28, 12-25 and 12-27 cassettes (SRAM 1070 and Shimano 5600) running on our bikes (SRAM Red and SRAM force and the chain is fully accommodating.

The limiting factor is the cage length, so a 28T is as big as you can go.

Put your chain big ring to big ring. Now pull RD forward and see how much chain slack you can get. You should be able to go+ 2 without a longer chain.

Yes, i'm using it with a shram red short with 11-26 and still plenty of movement left for your option and save £100 compared to a shram red cassette and only 10g heavier.

I have both FORCE and RED set ups on our bikes with 34-50 chainsets (SRAM) and short cage mechs both. I have 11-28, 12-27 and 12-25 cassettes on our wheels and they all work perfectly fine with no noticeable difference.

My understanding is that unless all your drive train and shifters are SRAM components the overall system will not work. In the past, I learnt the hard way as I tried a SRAM 11-28 with a SRAM Force/Red short cage rear mech with Shimano 105 dual control shifters and you only get 9 of the 10 gears. The individual movement shift pattern of the levers is different between SRAM and Shimano.

If the sprocket design is similar to the OG-1070, they will not accommodate the extra-long splines on the Dura Ace freehub body.

I have the same problem with my Ritchey (Dura Ace-style) freehub and the OG-1070 cassette..

I'd be very grateful if someone can confirm compatibility with the new PG-1070.

I've used this cassette on 2 bike all Ultegra 1 double 1 triple & have had great results. I have 16 screws in my knee changing to this cassette has let me ride longer & climb more. I now can go 200 miles & 10,000 ft of climbing & not be in pain. Can't help you with the Dura Ace wheels as I run Bontragers.

Question
Shimano Ultegra Compatibility
I have an Ultegra 6600 groupset currently with a 12-25 cassette. Are the 11-28 and 12-27 cassettes compatible with what I have? I know that the 11-28T 6700 cassette isn't.

I'm surprised that the 6700 11-28T cassette is not compatible - it could only be due to the size (length) of the rear derailler (spelling, I know!).
All SRAM and Shimano 10 Speed cassettes are fully interchangeable with the only limiting factor being cage length.

I have both SRAM Red and SRAM Force short cages so the maximum sprocket is a 28T.

I currently have a Shimano 5600 12-25T (10S) and SRAM PG1070 12-27T and 11-28T cassettes running on our bikes and the wheels are fully interchangeable with no performance difference or need to re-calibrate the shifting mechanism.

Further, I have provided my spare wheel on occasion to other parents with 10S Shimano needing a quick rear wheel spare at a race events with no issues.

Hope this helps

The cassettes are compatible but you should check your rear mech compatiblity with the ratio's. Generally you should be able to use a 11-27 on a short, medium or long cage mech but a 11-28 can be too much for some mechs. The 6600 rear mech only supports up to a 27t.

Yes, absolutely. With a 10-speed cassette (and chain) you'll just need more precise fingers when shifting. Otherwise it will work fine. Make sure the whole drivetrain is compatible.

As long as you are using a 10 speed derailleur you should be fine. It does depend on the friction shifter so best to check with the manufacturer to be 100% sure.
