Customer Questions & Answers for
Tacx Antares Professional Training Rollers

With the Antares you can now focus even more on your goals in training: improve your fitness and pedal stroke and reinforce your sense of equilibrium at the same time. Tacx Antares rollers distinguish themselves through the heavy conical rollers that create the momentum of mass inertia. When collapsed the rollers measure only 80 cm and are therefore easily transportable. The Antares rollers are Tacx's revolutionary contribution to the new found popularity of track racing. The concept of rollers is quite old. It is how indoor training for cyclists started out. In 1972 Tacx BV launched the manufacturing process of its first rollers. This later turned out to be a stroke of genius. Many people who own a sports or racing bicycle want to stay fit, even in winter. Over time three models were developed. But then there also were the rear wheel trainers, pushing the original rollers into the background. These rear wheel trainers are collapsible and allow you to train at high resistances. But the rollers offer advantages for training that no other trainer is capable of offering. Just think of improving your pedal stroke, your equilibrium, suppleness and concentration on your steering. To put it in a nutshell, the rollers are the perfect tool for cyclists to have next to their cycle- ergo- or VR trainer.

I tried my mountain bike on these rollers. It works well, fitting on the rollers in the same position as my road bike, but the noise is really annoying from the MTB tyres. So, yes you can use your mountain bike, but buy some earplugs or an MP3 player

no reason why you can't, but not with MTB tyres. it would be very noisy and probably unstable

Yes - rode on this a number of times with the MTB. The nobly tires aren't the best so I would suggest some cheap slicks if you can find them - gets a bit noisy.

Apart from that the ride is fine. I would set your shocks to firm though!

Yes but you would need to change your tyres to slick training tyres.

Question
What is the weight limit?
I'm a bit of a bloater, but cycling is starting to help. Got a sponsored ride next year so need to get seriously fit; commute to work x3 and longer ride at weekends, but based on last winter, won't be able to keep this going, so thinking about rollers to add to my borrowed turbo. Thanks

Would recommend the Antares Rollers. Tricky to begin with to get your balance but after you get your balance a great training aid. Get a good workout.

I'm 85Kgs and I haven't broken them yet. They seem very strong and stable. If you want to keep those belly muscles under control, I'd definitely purchase a set of rollers. The borrowed turbo will keep you conditioned but the rollers will preserve/improve your pedalling style and stability.

We are not aware of a weight limit on these rollers. You could ask Tacx directly but the information is not readily available. We have never had a issue with weight limits on trainers before, they are very sturdy.

As they are infinitely adjustable for wheelbase i can't see why not.The only issue would be tension of the roller band if rollers are too close together

have thought so - depends on wheel base and the Tacx is adjustable.

We would not recommend using small wheeled bikes on training rollers as the wheels are not properly supported.

Question
First indoor trainer, these rollers or a turbo trainer?
No idea which to get. Rollers or a trainer where you attach the rear wheel

Depends what you want! The Pro's of one are the con's of the other. I prefer rollers as they simulate real riding - requiring complete concentration on steering and balance, but check you can get one that adds resistance if you require that. Turbo trainers generally offer variable resistance, but its like riding an exercise bike - no balance concentration. Also if you have a carbon fibre bike you'll probably find the bike maker will stipulate you shouldn't attach these to turbo trainers - where as rollers will be OK

answer 2
If you have a lot of time to put into going on the rollers, get them.
Although you cannot adjust the resistance like you can on the better Turbo Trainers, these are a true test of your technique.
They will help develop good technique & good cadence,if you can ride rollers without moving you are there and this will flow through to your road style !
Just watch a pro cyclists ride rollers..they are awesome.
Otherwise, get the turbo. I didnt have the patience with rollers and they are a bit strange at first, but you will get used to them.

answer 3
Rollers generally require alot of previous riding experience and some confidence to try them for the first time. The plus side is that rollers offer a realistic ride feel and improve your balance as well as your technique while riding. A trainer will not offer balance or technique improvment as you are not required to do anything other than pedal, the frame of the trainer will keep you in place and prevent rocking, bobbing or similar. I would recommend rollers but you should really try a set before you buy.

As it's rollers you can put anything on it but offroad tyres are very noisy. I am using slicks on my old mountain bike and that's fine. You can adjust the length to suit any size of bike.

I use this with my mtb and it's fine. Yep it is a good idea to run slicks, TACX make some specifically for this purpose and they are super quiet too. It is a pain changing tyres just for training so pick up a cheap set of wheels so it's just a quick, simple wheel change. Well worth it for the skills you gain/maintain while trying to not fall off the darn things.
