No. The derailleur in your question is a 'conventional' type. Conventional indicates that the clamp is above the cage.
The derailleur shown below (the M770) is a top swing model. Top swing indicates that the clamp is below the cage.

answer 3
Yes, I have it on my 7.5fx, you will loose the ability to put 1 bottle rack on the frame as the clamp sits between the bolts. But there is space for another. The mech has been great never let me down once in the past year I have had it & I cycle 28 mile round trip to work so its had some use

Yes this would work fine, I have it on a 48T and it works like a dream its a 9 speed but don't think that makes any difference

This derailleur has a max chainring size of 44t. The Shimano XT M770 Front Derailleur has a max chainring size of 48t but may not fit your frame, you will need to check compatibility before purchase.

It may interfere with the lower bottle mount (If fitted). I would suggest M770 as a preferred fitment.

answer 2
As long as the GT Zaskar frame uses a convensional derailleur you should be fine. The derailleur is multi fit so will fit the frame size and can take cables in from top or bottom.

Must the chain be split to fit this derailleur?
I am replacing an old xt which has a screw at the back of the cage allowing it to be opened and fitted over the chain.

You will need to split the chain to fit the derailleur. The cage is riveted together rather than screwed together.

Question
Are these components compatible with a Surly LHT frame?
I'm building up a touring bike based around a Surly Long Haul Trucker frame which I bought from Wiggle. With all the different options of top swing and bottom swing derailleurs, and different parts for different chain stay angles, I just wanted to make sure the components listed below are compatible with each other and my frame before ordering.
Thanks!

Yes the derailleur and the chainset are compatible. I've just put both on my bike, a Marin hybrid custom tourer, and am most happy with the changes!

As for whether the M771 fits an LHT, to my knowledge this front derailleur can fit many different frame sizes, being adjustable, and I think it also comes with shims, (although I let my bike shop replace my drivetrain as the mechs there did a better job than I would have done). Put it this way, I'd be very very surprised if it didn't fit, it's the most versatile XT front derailleur option.

Check your frame seat tube size, see if you can find more info about the M771 elsewhere online, if still unresolved go ask a mech./tech in a bike shop.

May the wind be in your wheels!
