Absolutely, it is easy to change when setting up your computer, which you need to do to adjust it for wheel/tyre size.

I think they come out of the box set to km anyway, but make sure you set it up correctly for your wheels/tyres.

Yes and No.

You don't need anything extra to get running but some LED lights will stop the head unit receiving a signal. On winter mornings when using my 1 watt front LED light, I could not get the unit to work. I had to change the light to flash mode or off for it to function.

I am not sure if I understand the question well, but miles are recorded only when the device is on. The device turns on automatically, when the magnet on the wheel rolls around the sensor.

If the unit has be standing for a long time it goes into an idle battery saving mode. Before you commence riding you need to press on the unit to re-activate it. From then on it is always monitoring until you stop for a long time. I've never had to re-set it on any rides include when stopped at lights, crossing, or being stationary for 15 mins.

It records the distance you have covered on three screens. you have to zero each one separately but the cumulative one can only be deleted by a reset. The unit remains on all the time going into a sleep mode if left. I've had 18months out of my battery so far

As soon as the bike moves the odometer will turn on. If it is not working possibly the magnet is too far away from the sensor, it must be 5mm, or it wont read.

As long as the unit is recording the speed and current mileage it will put it into the odometer, however if you do a hard reset then the computer will wipe all the information including the odometer.

The device cannot really be turned off just put into sleep mode

The unit itself never actually turns off, it just goes into sleep mode after 5 mins if no activity is detected. Just the time is displayed.

The odometer comes alive once the wheels have gone round a few revolutions and records from then.

I've just gone past the 1,000 mile mark on mine after 5 months :o)

No. You need the sensor and the screen to be a maximum of 70cm appart. As the front wheel doesn't turn on a turbo you would need to fit it to the rear wheel so you wouldn't be in range.

The computer must be reasonably close to the sensor and facing towards it so I don't see how the sensor can be attached to the back wheel unless you just want to check the figures after training (or ride back the front!)

No, the magnet attaches to the front wheel. If you want one that works on the home-trainer, the CATEYE STRADE DOUBLE WIRELESS CADENCE has a magnet that attaches to the rear wheel. It's more expensive because of the cadence feature.

Yes you can. I would imagine that the person may be referring to the instruction manual rather than the unit. The unit can accept 1mm increments in wheel circumference. There is a table of these in the manual and it covers the "normal" sizes in each bike form, such as road race wheels, mtb knobbies, mtb slicks, etc. It doesn't list every possibility though so my recommendation would be (and I would recommend this ANYWAY) is to do a rollout measurement of the tire and use that value in the computer.

Tricky one that as the sensor on the front fork can only be a max of 500mm from the wireless computer on the handlebars.

If you put it on the rear fork it might be too far for the computer to read it...it might go at a longer distance but I've never tried.
