Questions & Answers for Continental Grand Prix 4000 Road Tyre (2) and Tube Set

Is the Continental 4000 a good sportive tyre? Or is the Gatorskin a better sportive tyre? The 4000 feels quicker but is it as durable?

i have used the Gatorskins for long rides as well as city trips and founs no complanints with these tyres. I compare them with the 4000 Grand Prix and one of these had a large side wall cut at a very young age, may just be a freak accident. Yes I believe the grand Prix 4000 to be a bit quicker but negligible over a long country ride. The Gatorskin is no slow trye by any means. I have been recommending the gator skins to all my friends because they just keep going ang going and I am very happy with them.

Question
Tyres degrading
I have bought a set of Continental GP4000 tyres and after 2years they are starting to fall apart, fibres are peeling off the tyre walls.
Is this normal they have not been used extensively less than 1000miles?
Should they be cared for in in a certain way?
What tyre is best all purpose race/training tyre that will not fall apart?

Since I discovered GP4000 I only use this type on my bikes (all three of them). One of them has over 4.000 km and the other two 700 & 500 km respectively. The older one has lots of cracks and cuts but only on the outer layer and there is still lot of rubber above wear marks. All of them at about 400 km start to peel of some fibre of the side walls which I remove by cutting carefully and it doesn’t affect performance or usability. And above all they are very soft, grippy, and reliable as I got my first flat tire just two weeks ago.

Tyres can degrade over time, this is caused by the elements and substances found on the roads, such as oil, petrol and UV light. If left on the tyre without washing the tyre can dry out and crack, UV light and changes in temperature during storage will also contribute. We suggest keeping the bike clean and kept out of direct sunlight when not in use, this should help with this kind of problem. We find Continental, Vittoria and Schwalbe to be very good tyres, the http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/C... is possibly the best all rounder, but it will not be the fastest tyre.

Question
What size for 700C Rims?
I currently have Ritchey OCR 700C rims with 28c Maxxis Detonator tyres which I want to swap for a thinner tyre.

Would Continental 700x25's fit OK? Would 700x23's be too thin?

700X23 won't be too thin, you will probably find they are not quite as comfortable but have much less rolling resistance and will go a lot faster than your current 28mm tyre. The 25mm are probably OK it just depends on the level of performance you are after. Go the 23's you probably won't go back.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any details on a 700c version of the Ritchey OCR rim so I can't give you advice on what tyre size is suitable. If you measure the width of the rim from the inside of the braking surfaces (where the tyre hooks in) you can use the below linked chart to see what tyre size is suitable: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#width

yes, the valve core is removable so you can use either type of valve extension. I am using the conti valve extension that allow me to put the valve at the top so it is easy to let out air if I want to adjust pressure.

The black GP4000 is, by most accounts the same tyre.

The coloured GP4000 tyres use silica instead of "black chili."

answer 2
The S tyre uses the Black Chilli compound, gaining increased grip, durability and reduced rolling resistance.
