Without knowing more about your bike I would suggest popping in to your local bike shop and asking their advice.

Replacing an XT Rear Mech
It looks like I currently have the XT 772. Photo is attached. is this a 772?
If I'm replacing with a XTR does it have to be a 972, or can I also use a 971? Thanks for your help

Yes you have the M772 rear derailleur currently. You could use either the M971 or M972 rear derailleur, they are both Top Normal action but the M972 uses the additional mount for a lower profile fit.
