don't need to use powerlink - you can just use the chain tool to remove one inside link and then rivet the chain together - but the powerlink is said to be as strong if not stronger than the chain itself - so why not use it?

answer 2
No you don't need to use the powerlink. If you need to shorten the chain you'll have to use a rivet tool any way. The powerlink is simply an easier way of joining the chain. If you shorten the chain don't forget to account for the powerlink (if you want to use it).

answer 4
You can remove links using a standard tool (to adjust length etc.). But to join the chain you should use the powerlink - why would you not want to?!

Question
Are these compatible with all Shimano 9 speed hyperglide cassettes?
Also, are there any compatibilty issues with chainrings? Can i use an older road chainring with this chain?

Yes, it is compatible.

I would not recommend using a new chain on an older chainring/cassette though, as they wear out together.

The new chain might slip, in which case you will need to buy a new chainring anyway.

Best way to see if it will work is to install it and go for a ride - if the chain slips you need to replace the old chainrings/cassette. If not, well, then jobs done!

You should be fine to use this chain with any 8 or 9 speed cassettes and chainrings from Shimano or SRAM.

Question
10 speed?
I know it's sold as a 9 speed but will this chain fit the Shimano 105 10 speed transmission on my Trek 2.3 road bike? Or do I need to buy a dedicated 10 speed chain?
