Questions & Answers for Tacx Sirius Folding Cycle Trainer

Question
Do I have to buy a trainer tyre?
I'm thinking of buying a turbo trainer but don't want to faff about changing the rear tyre every time I switch from trainer to road. Can I use a trainer with just my normal tyre or is the performance compromised by not using a 'special' trainer tyre?

I use the Sirius with a normal road tyre and haven't noticed any abnormal wear or loss of performance so go ahead and use the trainer as is - there's no real need to use a trainer tyre unless you have sticky, expensive race tyres that you don't want to use with it.

As I understand, you can use a normal road tyre on this trainer, however due to the heat generated when using the trainer a standard tyre will wear out very quickly.
I bought a continental turbo trainer tyre for use with this, however I have 2 bikes, one for use on the turbo and one for the road so I do not have the problem of needing to change the wheel.

you can use the trainer without the trainer tyre and it will work just fine. the only thing is though, that this will wear down your rear tyre pretty fast. after about five sessions with a non-trainer tyre on my turbo trainer, the rear wheel was noticably balder than the front - so i invested in the trainer tyre, which i keep on my spare set of wheels and then i change the wheel each time i need the trainer.

the trainer tyres are good because they are VERY hard, and wear down slowly.

so yeah, it's not a necessity to buy the tyre, but its probably advised.

Question
Setting resistance
Hi
I seem to be having problem setting the resistance on the trainer correctly. I'm using continental ultra gatorskin tyres 700x23c 100psi (as it was worse with 120psi)

I know something isn't right as when I stop pedalling wheel stops instantly absolutely no flywheel movement. The resistance is set to 10 via the cable which I assume is the lowest setting?

I've tried turning the knob on the underside but it doesn't allow enough adjustment.

I assume I didn't need to use the enclosed adapter's with a 700c wheel

I found I did need to use the adapter with my 700c wheel, and it works ok - maybe that's your problem?

I've had no problem running at 120, the easiest setting is 1 as normal gearing but I did find the assembly instructions very poor and had to work parts of it out myself check the flywheel is correctly positioned.

I bought the Tacx one which is a few £s more than some other brands but is heavy (good) and can adapt to various front wheel tyre thickness. No clever storage options but it does the main job well.

I use the Tacx Skyliner front wheel support, which is what they suggest on their website. It's small enough to not create any storage issues. I also use it to help store my bike upright when not in the trainer.

Question
Help! It is rubbing all the rubber off my back tyre!
Anyone know what might be going on here?
I've just used this 2 or 3 times and loads of tiny shreds of rubber are rubbing off the back tyre.. there is a noticeable bald-line on my back tyre now..
I am definitely still in the amateur/weakling category of cyclists, so this isn't due to some super-hard power-riding.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi, i've noticed a small amount of rubber on mine but nothing as drastic as yours, i think some rubber coming off is normal unless you use a trainer tyre???. Maybe it's how you have it adjusted or the quality of your tyre. I have a Hutchinson tyre on just now and it does appear to be ok although it is looking a bit "shiny". I have used my trainer about the same as you. I know it's not much but i hope it helps.

Yes but it is a good idea to swap the tire for a slick one as the knobbly mtb tires make a racket vibrating.

No, as the rear spindle ends need to fit snugly into the trainer, which is why a special quick release is supplied.

I'm sure there would be, but I bet it is robust enough if you can take your bike out and that can handle it.

Looking at the instruction booklet the roller unit location can be altered by using parts Z or W to alter the position for smaller wheel sizes. Wheel diameter 610 - 640 mm: assemble heightening
piece W with 4 bolts, nuts and rings (fig.6 in the instructions).
- Wheel diameter 690 - 720 mm: assemble extension piece Z (fig.7 in the instructions).
Instructions can be found at tacx.com.
