Question
Fitting to 2010 Ridgeback Velocity on 700c x 37 wheels/tyres
Fitting a set of 45 mm road guards to my new RB Velocity I find the front is OK, at least once the stays have been cut down, but the rear willl not fit the seat stay bridge. The problem is that the hole drilled in the bridge is vertical and not horizontal. This seems so odd that at first I thought it was a fault with the frame but apparently "some are like that" and I need to bolt directly through the mudguard and not use the sliding L bracket. Are there any other mudguards out there that use this method of fitting?

I fitted these mudgaurds to an On-One Pompino that has a vertical threaded hole at the back.

I drilled the mudguard and fixed it with a bolt and a couple of 1/2 inch tap washers between the guard and frame to get it a bit closer to the tyre.

Its been like thay since last autumn and works briliantly.

I've come accross this before and actually prefer to bolt through the mudguard as it looks cleaner. So long as you drill the hole correctly, then its fine and just as secure.

To answer my own question, drilling a hole in the mudguard and bolting directly through it gives a very neat secure fixing with no vibration, looseness or rattling from the rear mudguard. In practice I needed to fit a spacer approx 7 mm thick to align the mudguard correctly. To do this accurately it is essential to make a trial fitting with the wheel in place then remove the wheel to mark the point you need to drill through. Fiddly but worth the effort. It is a pity the fitting instructions don't cover this method, or even explain that not all bikes can use the bracket supplied.

Andy, I've got front suspension forks and I'm going to use zip ties and the mounting point on the brace between the forks. Technically, you're not supposed to fit a front guard to suspension forks. Apparently ;-).

More information on how at http://www.cyclingcrowd.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/uk-bicycle/6666/Mudgaurd-brackets-for-front-suspension-forks.

Not too sure what you've got on the rear suspension so can't help you on that one.

Unfortunately you would not be able to fit these mudguards to your full suspension bike. You would need fork fixing eyelets so it is better suited to hybrid style bikes than full suspension mountain bikes.

Either the 35-38 wide road or the 38-45 hybrid will be fine. I've just fitted a set of 35-38 road versions to my 700x28 hybrid and they fit great and look good.

I run the 35mm wide guards and I use 700*28 tyres which seems about as wide a tyre should be used so I think you would be best using at least the next size up, 45mm, to get the best water protection

I have the same tyre size and recently installed the road 45 mm mudguard set. They have the correct amount of clearance for both width and height of the tyre.

These are not supplied. I didn't receive any and when I asked Wiggle Sales they replied via e-mail "These are additional items which are shown in the image for illustration purposes only. The parts are not supplied by SKS."

Question
Does the rear mudguard have a reflector or reflector mount?
I noticed on the picture that loads when you click on the listed picture for the SKS chromoplastic mudguards that it shoes a pair with the rear having what appears to be an integral reflector. Want to know if that is accurate.

Yes, mine fitted to disk brakes, by bending wire rods (using 2x pliers) around brake and lever, then trimming off excess rod length (dremmel). Rods are mild steel & bend to shape very well.

I'd go for the 35's. I just put a set on 700x 28's and went for the 35/38 road set, and they fit fine with good clearance.

I have 700x28c on my Ridgeback and had the same issue. I went for 35mm which fit very well indeed. I think 45mm may be slightly too wide but would prevent any side spray on a really wet run as there would be more run off.

Hope this helps.
