Hi,
I can only comment on one bike being carried on a Bones 2, but I hope my comments will be of use.
The rack itself rests on rubber feet which grip the bumper and window (for instance). There are then 3 pairs of straps which attach to the top and bottom of the boot, and the sides of the boot. When tightened fully, and tied off, the rack is rock solid. With previous racks I had to retighten the straps after mounting the bike, and again after every 50 or so miles.... but not with the Bones.... it starts off tight and stays that way. It is still advisable to check the straps regularly.
To finish, an anecdote...
On Saturday I was on the motorway doing 80 in my wife's little micra, with my heavy touring bike on the bones 2. Some ninny in a Range Rover swerved into the lane I was justing moving into, meaning I had to instantly swerve out the way and straighten up. Despite this 80mph swerving, the bike didn't even wobble, and the rack stayed rigid. An unintentional test which proved to me the quality of this rack.

If fitted correctly the Bones rack will perform well, one tip though, always mount the heaviest bike nearest the boot and the lightest bike at the back.
