You can adjust it for either, it's not the most sturdy clamp so works better when on the frame though

It will grip either.
It has quite a range of adjustment on the jaw and it copes well with my bikes from the skinny seatpost on the roadie through to clamping the stranglely shaped frame on my Enduro.

You can rotate the clamp so it could certainly be oriented to attach to any part of the bike. The size range of the clamp is also fairly large so I reckon it would attach to the seat post as well as the frame.

Sorry, don't know the dimensions of your Madone top tube but having just bought the workstand would expect that it would fit just about any bike. It is very adjustable and the clamp will open very wide and clamp as tight as you want. The clamp can be rotated to accomodate a top tube or seat tube or seat post.

Yes, although the clamp is essentially 2 v's coming together there is some padding and its highly adjustable so you can control the pressure to prevent any damage.

Yes.

I have a Madone 5.2 and I loosely tighten the clamp then turn the handle a couple of turns to hold bike in place.

Seems to hold very firmly but not under any stress.

answer 2
I believe carbon frames can be easily damaged by clamping and cannondale i have been told will not accept claims on frames if damaged by clamping. I may be wrong though but it makes sense to me as most frames will be strong in certain directions, so clamp on seat post if its not part of frame. If its a carbon post then i guess be careful.

answer 3
The vice gripper rotates 360 degrees so it can be used to grip (horizontally) the top-tube for non-carbon fibre frames and vertically for gripping a carbon frame bike via the seat stem,

The force of the vice gripper can be ajusted and isn't just a flat plate but almost like hands with rubber inserts so it grips and holds using friction as well as clamping force so the clamp doesn't have to be really tight.

Short answer: yes

I use it on mine without problems. There is a rubber guard on the jaws of the clamping system that is adequate.

If ever I'm in doubt I use a piece of old chamois leather to pad the frame.

I have a Trek 4.5 which has a squared of top tube and the stand holds it securely. The clamp has rubber innards (is that a word??) which mould round the frame. Great product would highly recommend.

Question
Workstands for carbon frames
I'd like to buy a workstand. Primarily for working on my carbon-framed road bike but I'd like the stand to be usable for other bikes including kids bikes.

Any recommendations? I've seen people saying you shouldn't use stands that clamp to frames / seatposts with a carbon frame, is this a real issue?

I don't see why a carbon frame would be a problem. The clamp uses the same quick release lever mechanism you see on wheels and seat post clamps. The tension is adjustable in the same way, you tighten the clamp a little then try to lock down the lever. If it's too hard to lock down the level, loosen it up a bit and try again.

This stand shouldn't have any problem holding kids bikes.

I use the stand for my carbon trek & it works a treat. I haven't need to clamp via my seat post.

Ultimately, you're not putting a lot of weight on the frame so it's not anywhere near the trauma of a normal ride.

I use it on my carbon ace bike and it's fine. I hung my wife's heavy steel bike on it and it collapsed. This seems to be due to the fact that it is tightened rather than locked. I'm pretty sure it would collapse every time I hung my wife's bike on it.

I don't see why you can't use this stand for a folder. The tube clamp can be rotated to any angle and can be adjusted to hold just about any size tubing! My partner and I each have an alloy commuter, carbon road and hefty MTB, and the stand is great for all of them. she's only 5'5" and I'm 6'5" so all sizes of bikes!

Hope that helps.

Yes - this stand holds my Dahon folding bike fine - as it can be set at a suitable angle to hold the bike by either a classic top-tube, or by grabbing the seat tube - that's how I hold my Dahon in this.
