Hi, I can confirm that they do not come with a reflector mount. This is because the cage/release mechanism is mounted parrallel with the shoe, i.e: there is no solid mount, just a spring mechanism. I have an old pair of clipless shoes, and they have a reflective pattern on the rear of the shoe. This does the job perfectly.
Many thanks.

nope! You'd be lucky to see these pedals once your feet are clipped to them. You might find that your shoes come with reflective surfaces on the rear anyway...if not, you can stick some on there.

I have both MTB and a Road bike and use the same M520 clip-in pedals on both as felt comfortable with the way the pedals worked and didn’t want the expensive of buying another pair of shoes. Maybe not ideal if I was going to take up road cycling seriously, but for an enthusiastic amateur i'm very happy.

You can put SPDs on road bike shoes, but the combination of hard plastic or carbon sole with a metal cleat against pavement doesn't work well and walking around on pavement, you'll wear them out or mess the cleats up to a point you may or may not be able to clip in or out of the pedals. SPD cleats should be worn or used on shoes where they are recessed, MTB shoes that is what they were designed for not road. If you choose to use SPDs on your Road Bike at least use the MTB shoe and cleat combo so it recessed like many people do including myself, this is my combo. Its far easier to walk in any condition in MTB shoes.

answer 11
They're fine on a road bike. A lot of commuters use them.
You might not get quite as much power transfer/stability as with a road clipless pedal (e.g. spd sl), but you get the benefits of being able to clip in to either side of the pedal and of being able to use them with mtb shoes (i.e. you can have a shoe with a recessed cleat, which makes it easier to walk around when you're off the bike).
Road cleats generally use 3 bolts whereas the cleats that fit M520s (eg SH51s) are 2 bolt. So you could have problems fitting the cleats to some road shoes.

You can fit them to any bike. The thread size is universal.

Though they are branded as 'mountain bike cleats' I've been running them in London on my road bike for a number of years, because it is easier to get shoes with recessed cleats for this fitting, which means for easier walking/frequent unclipping when hitting lights.

usually 2 peices mate.

If you mean how many pedals you will do while riding, I am not sure how far you go and what gear you would usually ride in. If you work it out though, in top gear over a distance of 40Km, I would say you are going to get well over 10,000 pedals out of this ride. If you did this once a week for a yeaer, that would be 520,000 pedals. pretty good value if they only last a year (which I think they will last much longer)

Question
Road or MTB shoes?
I want these pedals for cyclocross because they're dual-sided and you need to be able to get clipped back in quick. Loads of people are saying that road shoes fit them, but MTB shoes are easier to walk (and presumably run) in because cleats are recessed. However, would it actually be more useful in cyclocross to use the cleats like football studs, for better grip on mud and uphill? After considering pros and cons of each, what would you recommend?

If you use road shoes and use the cleats as grips they will become damaged and clogged up with mud risking problems clipping in and more importantly releasing. Road shoes are only really suitable for long rides on the road where you aren't clipping and unclipping regularly and definitely not for walking on mud in partucular.

MTB shoes every time. Thought the SIDI make a shoe that looks pretty similar to the Genius 6.6 road shoe that is a MTB shoe and it's pretty hard to tell them apart until you turn them over. Road shoes usually also have lots of carbon or plastic on the bottom, whereas MTB shoes have lots of tread...the cleats will still work like footy spikes!!!

Buy MTB shoes, and if you can, try before you buy, as each manufacturer uses a diferent last.
To note, road shoes during a cyclocross race will help entertain the crowds (the running sections will be a bit slippy).

If you are going to be running on mud, the cleats on road shoes aren't enough - you'll need mountain bike soes. The only draw back of these are a little extra weight and slightly less aerodynamic.

Certainly MTB shoes are your answer and if you are prepared to pay a bit extra specilized do a model where two spikes can be attached to the sole near the front for extra grip whilst walking up hills etc.

For cyclocross purposes it is essential to have recessed cleats.

Recessed cleats will clear mud much better.

They are also 'walkable'. In cyclocross, you will have to run. Running in non-recessed cleats is not practical.

Proper CX shoes (and other MTB shoes) will have spikes or studs in the sole, in front of the cleats. You don't want to use the cleats the dig in. You want to use these spikes or studs for that purpose.

answer 9
If you need to get off your bike to walk, run or climb a hill I would go with the MTB shoes. The cleats are recessed so there is minimal scraping on the ground and they are designed to be able to be walked in. The road shoes are normally more difficult to walk in as the front of the shoes is raised by the cleats. MTB shoes normally have grips on the soles to help walking and running on mud and trail.

I would recommend making sure that the cleats are screwed in really tight because if not when you are walking/running and you hit a stone it can move the cleat, which makes it really hard to get the cleat in and out of the pedal.
