answer 1
I have both MTB and a Road bike and use the same M520 clip-in pedals on both as felt comfortable with the way the pedals worked and didn’t want the expensive of buying another pair of shoes. Maybe not ideal if I was going to take up road cycling seriously, but for an enthusiastic amateur i'm very happy.
You can put SPDs on road bike shoes, but the combination of hard plastic or carbon sole with a metal cleat against pavement doesn't work well and walking around on pavement, you'll wear them out or mess the cleats up to a point you may or may not be able to clip in or out of the pedals. SPD cleats should be worn or used on shoes where they are recessed, MTB shoes that is what they were designed for not road. If you choose to use SPDs on your Road Bike at least use the MTB shoe and cleat combo so it recessed like many people do including myself, this is my combo. Its far easier to walk in any condition in MTB shoes.

I have two road bikes running these pedals, I like them as the cleats are recessed in the soles of the shoes so you can walk in them. great for commuting.

I have fitted these pedals to my road bike and actually use an MTB shoe which means I can walk a long way with them on if necessary as they are just like trainers. It took me just minutes to get used to them after using toe clips all my life (I am over 60). Just remember to release your foot before you come to a stop.

I have a set of Shimano PD-M520's on both my mountain bike and road bike. The cleats are not compatible with road shoes. I happily use my mountain bike shoes on the road bike (Specialised BG Sport) and never had any problems.

Hi,
I use these pedals for commuting to work (MTB) and on my race MTB. For both purposes these pedals are great. I didn't needed to adjust the releasde springs at all.
And for the Wiggle price they are great value.

These pedals will not fit road cleats. I found it difficult to switch to keo/road pedals on my road bike, so switched back to M520s on my road bike. Some road shoes come with additional holes for MTB cleats.

I use these pedals on my road bike with road SPD cleats and they are absolutely fine. I commute 24miles a day in trafic with traffic lights, grime and lots of stops. no problems yet.

answer 8
Yes these are fine for road, I only use these type on my road bike as they are easy to walk in as well. As to the shoes make sure they are SPD compatable as these have 2 holes SPD SL have 3 holes and will not work.

Yes - I've now happily used them on my touring bike. Can't see why they are advertised as MTB pedals; really they are multi-purpose.

They're fine on a road bike. A lot of commuters use them.
You might not get quite as much power transfer/stability as with a road clipless pedal (e.g. spd sl), but you get the benefits of being able to clip in to either side of the pedal and of being able to use them with mtb shoes (i.e. you can have a shoe with a recessed cleat, which makes it easier to walk around when you're off the bike).
Road cleats generally use 3 bolts whereas the cleats that fit M520s (eg SH51s) are 2 bolt. So you could have problems fitting the cleats to some road shoes.
