Customer Questions & Answers for
Transfil Gear Cable Inner

Transfil is situated in the heart of France, at the base of the volcanoes where nature thrives in splendor. This region is also a genuine ground for innovation and know-how. Deversity of pleasures, diversity of uses, diversity of needs. For 50 years, Transfil has created, developed, tested and manufactured brake and gear systems for your bike in conformity with the leading bicycle and component manufactures and for every outdoor use : extreme, road and mountain biking. A cable is composed of an inner core and an outer core. The inner core is composed of one steel thread surrounded by 6 threads making one strand. At this point a simple strand or multi-strand cable can be produced. The composition of a single strand cable is (1+6) + 12 = 19 threads, and a multi-strand is (1+6) x 7 = 49 threads. Lasers have been set in place to increase production as well as to control the diameter on a permanent basis and in case of any anomalies stop the machine. Each laser sends out the information acquired to a central computer unit where statistics and analysis can be retrieved.

Question
Shimano / SRAM gear cable compatibility
I'm after a gear cable for SRAM Red road shifters, but WIggle is out of stock on Transfil SRAM inner gear cables.

Would the Transfil Shimano inner gear cables work instead?

The Barell that locates in your shifter handle is different for the different drive trains so you are likely to get problems.

I would wait and get the proper cables.

Hi,
think the answer is no. You need to get the SRAM compatible ones - apparently cos of a difference of a couple of mil. I was thinking about it and just went for the SRAM compatible ones to save the fuss if it didn't fit.

There is a tiny difference between Shimano and SRAM inner cables. Shimano are 1.2mm thick and SRAM are 1.1mm thick. This won't stop the cable working but may cause tightness in some tight outer turns. You should use the correct size if possible.

Yes. Get outers too, no point just doing inners. New ferrules are also a must do.

Question
I thought a gear cable was a gear cable. Has someone changed the cable end dimension or is the thickness different to match each company's oem outers?
I've been using Transfil Shimano inners with 3 sets of (older) ergo levers without any problem. Have Campagnolo changed something on newer ergos or is the differentiation just marketing on Transfil's part?

This is an interesting one. Gear cables have traditionally come in 1.1 or 1.2 mm. I've always used 1.2 in everything Shimano since 8 speed. 1.1 just don't gel with outer as well. Transfill are kind of in between - like a 1.15 or a tad more. Don't know why, maybe to cover all bases. Anyway I'm sticking with the tried and tested (and most reliable) 1.2 Shimano stainless.

Depends on the nipple on the end but should be fine, worth the risk at this price and even as someone who rides for another bike internet shop I have to say Wiggle's returns policy is second to none so its worth the risk!

Question
How would I determine compatibility with my bicycle?
Do I need to take a measurement or is it dependant on the brand of shifter/gears I have on my bicycle?
Also, if I am replacing the entire cables, do I need to purchase anything else?

The cables would depend on the brand of shifters you are using. If you replacing all then you will require brake and gear cables and wire caps.
