Already found the answer, but might as well share it here: according to the specs on Oval Concepts's website, these are c-c measurements.

Hi there, I have bought a focus cayo 50cm,road bike from wiggle and i wanted to upgrade the handlebars to the oval one. is it possible to let me know which size would be appropriate to buy from the two you have got left in stock?

We currently only have the 44cm in stock. To best decide what size handle bar you need you should measure across your shoulders and match the width as best as possible. For a size 50cm road bike you would likley need a 40-42cm bar though.
