You should be fine doing this, you will need to have your gears checked afterwards to make sure the shifting is till accurate. The change to and from the 22t ring won't be the smoothest because of the large size gap but should be fine otherwise.

Question
Compatibility with race-face Evolve XC crank-spider
Previously I have had M580 LX rings that fit fine except that they had internal lugs inboard of the bolt-holes that were about 2mm too long. I don't want to have to go thru that grinding process again!! Bike is an Aus spec Giant Reign 2008. Thanks in advance.

We would always suggest sticking to the same brand to avoid compatability issues, such as the one you mention. We do a large range of Race Face rings which can be found here: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/mc/cycle/7/Race_Face/Chainrings/

The chainrings match in specifications, they are both 104BCD, 4 arm, 32t chainrings. You will be able to fit the chainring but mixing types of chainring can still cause problems if the ramps and pins do not match and line up correctly. You may experience noise or even chain jumps.

Question
How do I measure chainring ring PCD?
I need to replace the middle chain ring on my MTB. Existing setup is Shimano XT. I think I've found what I need on your site, but just want to double check how to measure PCD. Is it taken from the inside diameter or outside? The Shimano 104 PCD Deore M510 4 Arm Middle Chainring looks like what I need, but 104mm on my chainring is the BCD.

Cheers

Paul

Measure between two closest bolt holes then on a 4 bolt ring multiply the figure by 1.4, on a 5 bolt ring multiply the figure by 1.7. You then get the PCD/BCD of the ring. BCD and PCD are the same thing.

You should be fine with this chainring on a M542 chainset. The chain will work but generally you will get a better performance from a cheaper 9 speed chain on 9 speed rings, 10 speed chains will work though.
