I don't see why any number is too many - after all, if your chain goes it only needs one link to fail (but these don't in my experience). I use 3 quite close togehter on a singlepseed bike to allow a half link, plus shortening & lengthening the chain for different gearing depending where I ride. That's my winter bike & had no problems at all.
If your chain is failing at several points, you may need to replace anyway (or look at why it's hapening)

There probably isn't a limit, but if you have more than a couple surely it means your chain has seen better days and its time for a new one.

Unfortunately there is no way of telling this without trying it. It can depend on your style of riding and if you ride alot of hills or off road. We would recommend that you only use one pair though.
