Questions & Answers for Park Tools CM5 Cyclone Chain Cleaner

Question
What cleaning fluid is used with this product?
I read that its best to avoid solvents as they remove the lube that's factory inserted inside the chain links.

I think you intend to remove any lube from the chain, the only reason you avoid hydrocarbon solvents is not to damage (dissolve) the scrubber and its parts.

The Park brand of cleaning fluid is excellent, well worth the money, and does the job well. :)

Any mild degreaser should work on your chain. You should re-lubricate your chain after cleaning so removing factory lube is not an issue.

Not sure about this one, but don't think that factory insert anything special between links that will last more than a few rides anyway. I just use citrus degreaser and then re-lube with a ptfe based oil or GT85.

Its probably best to avoid solvents for cleaning your chain.

Try using Citrus Desgreaser for the best results, thats what I use and its great.

I used Park Tools CB2 and lube the chain afterwards with White Lightning Epic Ride wax. This is a better alternative to oil as it’s clean. As long as you re lube correctly as recommended on product you choose it should be no problem. You want your cleaner to remove abrasive paste even from inside the chain links.

Although it doesn't come with a full 16oz bottle, you should use the cleaner linked below.

Provided the alfine hub is still being used with a chain and not a belt, then yes.

You just hold this in place on the chain and back pedal. If your hub allows you to do this, you'll be fine.

Yes, this fits on the chain on the bottom just behind the chainring(s). There is a handle to hold whilst you turn the cranks backwards.

I think you may struggle with this, as it not just the width but the locking mechanism will only accept certain size (aka bicycle chain)

I have this cleaner and I am pretty sure the motrobike chain won't fit. Also its probably the wrong pitch (length between link rollers).

No, I don't think so. A mountain bike chain is a pretty snug fit already.

I don't think it will be big enough, plus you need to have some slack in the chain (easy to obtain on a pedal bike because of the deraillieur arm swinging around but not sure if motorbike chain could do this without loosening back wheel.

Question
Why are bristles being pulled out by my chain?
I've had this cleaner for a while and been very pleased with it... until I replace my chain - went from a HG53 to a HG73 (although that shouldn't have mattered) - now, some of the bristles get stuck between the link plates and get pulled out when I turn the crank. Firstly this is really annoying as I have to pick them out of the chain and secondly, at this rate won't be any bristles left to clean the chain with soon!

I have a HG-73 chain myself and have had no issues with bristles getting pulled out. If you say you've had your chain cleaner a while I would suggest it is simply a bit of wear and tear. It is possible to buy a replacement brush kit for the CM5 chain cleaner, its cheap too so dont be alarmed.

Hello Mark,

I have also had bristles pull out - mine has now stopped, I have used it 8 times now. I also raised the Q about bristles - my advice is use it to death, as it actually works & if you wear the bristles out (pull them out...) ask park if there is a replacement set - my guess is there will be. On getting the bristles out (which are not too many..) just use your long nosed pliers. In short, I don't think it has anything to do with the chain type, I get the odd bristle on any type of chain I have cleaned

hope this helps?
