I need a cheap fork for my12 year old daughter's bike. Mainly road use with some forest trail riding, I'm rebuilding her an old Giant Boulder sport, but it has a 1" steerer. I have some RST 281 forks, but they are 1 1/8, should I try to change the steerer tube, or buy another set o budget (sub £50!) forks>

I once converted a very old frame with a 1" steerer to use forks which come with 1 1/8" as standard. The only way I could do this was to change the steerer tube. I think I got it from Halfords (pre-internet days) and all it was was a stepped tube that was 1 1/8" at the bottom where it fitted a standard fork and 1" the rest of the way to suit the frame.

Leisure/touring/commuting use with calm downhills. Lightweight important. Price not so important. Standard disc compatible -direct replacement required.

if you need the lightest possible fork with the performance to ride everything listed you would need the Rockshox SID fork with Poploc. The fork is super light and has a lockout so the climbs will be less tireing. There are a couple of versions of the fork, I will list some below.

I would recommend the White Brothers Rock Solid Rigid Fork linked below. You will need the 26" version but the fork will be lighter and still be capable of off road riding if you so wish.
